In a failed state, the government's priorities are totally separate from those of the people. The U.S. can't afford health care or a bailout for jobless homeowners, but it can afford a pointless war and multimillion-dollar bonuses for banksters who wrecked the economy.

Are some of Madoff's investors -- who knew they were assuming substantial risk by placing money into a hedge fund -- trying to pull a fast one now? Some are asking that the calculation of their positions be altered in a way that could shower taxpayer subsidies on them, even if they lost nothing!

Today, the Commerce Department will report September international trade in goods and services. The trade deficit -- the amount imports exceed exports -- is expected to rise to $32.5 billion from $30.7 billion in August.
